Keeping your Sweet Tooth in check

Now pregnant with my second child I am unfortunately craving sweet food. I have never had a sweet tooth before and it really is hard to resist all those yummy cakes and sweets. I am trying very hard not to put on 20kg with this baby like I did with my first so I have been researching healthy ways to fix these cravings.

I have found 5 things that have helped to stop these cravings.

1. 2 x Ryvitas with cottage cheese drizzled with honey (calories per serve 124)
Cottage cheese is a good low calorie option and goes well with honey

2. A bowl of fruit salad
Apart form satisfying sweet cravings, you will also receive a hit of essential vitamins and minerals
   (calories per server 124)

3.  1 Slice of rye bread, toasted and topped with a table spoon of honey and half a banana.
Rye bread is high in fibre and considered a good source of magnesium (calories per serve 215

4. 3/4 of a cup of cooked oats, prepared with low fat milk, topped with 8 raspberries and drizzle of honey. Oats are full of fibre and are known to keep you fuller for longer. (Calories per server 141)

5. Date and Almond Energy Balls
Made with cinnamon honey and raw almonds these are sweet enough with out sugar. (calories per ball 100) Recipe to come.

These 5 things have so far been helping to keep me away from donuts and chocolate and are great for keeping that  sweet tooth in check. Also I don't allow myself to go grocery shopping while I am hungry. I do allow my self a treat once a week because you have to be naughty sometimes :)

Face Saver Testimonials

Here are a few testimonials for Neat Face Saver:

I found this product yesterday at a Walmart. I didn't even know if things like this existed, but had planned to start an online search. I take a medication that causes excessive sweating, even in the dead of winter. It is SO embarrassing! I'm 30 and look like I'm going through early menopause! I have a trip to Disney coming up in May, and the idea of dealing with this problem there is mortifying. Day one went very well, and I am incredibly thankful for this product. For me it needs refreshed at least once a day, but that matters nothing given the results.

By Justina

Love this its a great primer for makeup! and im sure its helping make my pores look smaller which is a big bonus

By Holly

I absolutely LOVE this product! I come from a long line of super sweaters, and this really does help. I also have the redness from rosacea when I get hot (not the acne though), and this does not irritate the skin on my face at all. I'm SO GLAD I found this product. I hope they NEVER stop making it!

By Janice

I am so happy I found this! GREAT PRODUCT, I'm stocking up! I've been testing it all day! I live in az. Wouldn't matter though, I get facial sweat from someone looking at me- I went and sat in my black car that has been in the sun all day- I didn't sweat. This will really change my life, I always avoid everything outside, too embarrassing. I am super grateful and now I can start to live again!

How to keep your make-up from running

I am a serious sweater and it can be extremely annoying when I have just done my makeup. There is nothing worse than having your makeup run down your face and turning up to a function or meeting and trying to save your make-up. That was until I found Neat Face Saver Gel. This Product is awesome, has helped to prevent my face sweating and gives me more confidence when going into a function.

What is Face Saver Gel?

Neat Face Saver Gel has been developed as a lightweight, gel formulation which is best applied before other facial cosmetics, but may be applied at any time. The antiperspirant gel formulation of Neat Face Saver Gel evaporates rapidly from the surface of the skin leaving the active, antiperspirant ingredient as a thin film whose antiperspirant effect will last for several hours. The product will not affect the production of perspiration from the scalp, but it will help to decrease the amount of perspiration visible on the face. Similarly, the beads of sweat that can form on the upper lip during tense business meetings are much less likely to occur.

How to use Face Saver Gel?

Neat Face Saver Gel should be applied to the forehead, the upper lip and the back of the neck. It should not be applied on or near the eyes, and it should not be applied to the scalp. The product does not appear to cause any reactions with other cosmetic ingredients, and it is entirely safe to use. As with all antiperspirants and cosmetics, there is a slight risk of an allergic reaction to one or other of the product's ingredients, but this will settle when use of the product is stopped.

  • Prevents excess facial perspiration
  • Reduces excess facial wetness and shine
  • Can be applied before makeup
  • Light gel leaves no facial residue, no deposit, no stickiness
  • Easy and smooth to apply
  • Makeup and sunscreens stay on longer
  • Keeps makeup looking fresh all day even in hot weather
  • Available in Walgreen Stores in the Deodorant section
  •
Neat Face Saver is used by people working in warm climates, sportspeople and people who perspire more freely than others. It is particularly useful for those people that suffer the embarrassment of having facial perspiration dripping down the forehead. .

When Neat Face Saver Gel is applied prior to other cosmetics, the second product will remain on the skin for much longer and will be less influenced by facial perspiration. This is particularly helpful for sunscreens and other such products which are required to remain on the skin for as long as possible.

    Importance of eating breakfast

I have a friend that is trying to lose some extra kilos and asked for some tips.(I do have permission to blog about her ) I know for a fact she has never eaten breakfast and has always struggled with losing weight. She is very determined this time so she is going to really try to start her day the right way.

Here is why it is so important to eat breakfast:

Everyone knows that the key to successful weight loss is a combination of regular exercise, healthy eating and a positive mind. There’s no point working out five days a week if you’re going to give in to temptation and inhale three kebabs and a packet of Tim Tams when you get home.
Healthy eating doesn’t necessarily mean dieting, it refers instead to eating sensible, balanced amounts of the right foods at the right times – and that includes a good breakfast.
There’s a reason why people have said for many years that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. After six, seven or eight hours – if you’re lucky – of sleep, your body and brain need some fuel to power and prepare them for the day ahead. Like a car, you can’t run on an empty tank, you need some petrol.

It’s a well known fact that people who eat breakfast lose more weight than people who don’t and this is due to several reasons:

    1. Breakfast provides the energy your body requires in order to perform activities. Therefore, you’re not so tired and can do more.
    2. It kickstarts the body into producing the enzymes needed to metabolise fat, helping to shed the pounds.
    3. Eating a good breakfast keeps you full for longer and may make you less likely to reach for snacks.
In addition, breakfast is generally good for you. Those who eat breakfast are 50 per cent less likely to have blood sugar problems. Also they have a decreased risk of developing diabetes or having high cholesterol levels which could lead to heart disease. Also, some breakfast foods such as grains, seeds and dried fruit provide vitamins and minerals that are hard to find in other foods.
People who don’t eat breakfast often complain that it’s “too early” to eat or that they don’t have time in the morning. Excuses! Ways to rectify this include not eating too late the evening before, going to bed earlier or eating breakfast on the train/ bus on the way to work.

Who wouldn’t want to eat breakfast with such an array of delicious morning munchies options available?  Try some of these:

Make your own muesli by toasting some oats, then adding seeds, nuts and fruit as desired. Slice a banana on top, garnish with blueberries and pour on some yoghurt. This high fibre option will keep you full until lunchtime and the nutrients derived from the seeds, nuts and fruit will do all sorts of good.

Alternatively, how about blasting lots of lovely fruit up into a smoothie, which you could drink on the way to work? Smoothies are far more filling than you might imagine and allow you to be really creative. Experiment with flavour combinations, thin out a little with water, milk, fruit juice or low-fat yoghurt and enjoy.

For traditionalists, two slices of wholemeal bread with a scraping of butter and some Vegemite or a bowl of whole-grain cereal is fine. Top with honey or dried fruit for sugar and splash over some semi-or skimmed milk to reduce the refined sugar and fat content.

To say breakfast is the “most important” meal of the day underplays how significant it really is. Providing energy, nutrients and warding off chronic conditions, can you really afford not to eat it?

    Heel Pain and Plantar Fasciitis

Does heel pain cause you to suffer throughout your day? You’re not alone! Every day thousands of people suffer from heel pain. It is by far the most common foot complaint. Fortunately, there are some simple, medically proven ways to relieve this problem and prevent the return of pain in the heels.

The most common cause of heel pain (and heel spurs) is Plantar Fasciitis. The plantar fascia is the flat band of tissue under the foot that connects your heel bone to your toes. It supports the arch of your foot. Normally, the fascia is flexible and strong. However, due to factors such as abnormal stress, excessive weight, age, or poor foot function, painful stretching and micro-tearing of the plantar fascia occurs leading to irritation and inflammation at the attachment of the plantar fascia into the heel bone.
Other causes of heel pain are :

    -  over-pronation (fallen arches)
    - stand or walk on hard surfaces, for longer periods
    - are overweight or pregnant
    - have tight calf muscles and/or Achilles tendons

Continuous pulling of the plantar fascia at the heel bone, eventually leads to the development of a bony growth on the heel bone. This is called a heel spur. The heel spur itself is actually not causing the pain. It is the inflamed tissue around the spur that causes pain and discomfort.
Therefore, there is no real need to have heel spurs surgically removed in the treatment of heel pain and heel spurs.

The most effective solution to heel pain is to treat the cause of the problem by correcting abnormal foot mechanics with orthotic insoles. A recent Heel Pain study by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society found that by wearing orthotics, combined with a number of daily exercises, 95% of patients experienced substantial, lasting relief from their heel pain symptoms.

Neat Feat Spur Pads have been designed to relieve heel spur pressure and inflammation.

  • Cradles and supports sore heels caused by heel spur syndrome
  • Helps relieve Plantar Fasciitis and flat feet
  • Provides arch support and flexibility for comfort
  • Relieves sore, tired, burning and aching feet
  • 2 Spur Pads per Pack

  • Neat Feat Spur Pads have been designed to relieve heel spur pressure and inflammation. The pads catch shock forces and distribute them evenly throughout the heel reducing stress.

Being pregnant with my second child I am finding that I am hungry all the time. I have been looking for some healthier options to bake as I am starting to crave sweet food. I am trying very hard not to put on 20kg like I did with my first child. I found this recipe using coconut flour and gave it a go. My husband was not keen on the idea of changing how I bake. He loves his cakes but surprisingly they were very tasty and seems to be keeping me away from chocolate. :)

    The brilliant BANANA

    Banana Power
A banana gives a sustained and substantial boost of energy - that’s why they are a favourite choice for cyclists, footballers and other athletes looking for a quick source of carbohydrate. The riper a banana, the quicker it is digested and converted to muscle fuel. Athletes love to eat bananas before sport, at breaks during a tennis game, and to recover quickly from sport.

    Antioxidant power
Scientific research papers confirm that bananas have significant antioxidant power. One study showed that bananas reduced the oxidative stress in the blood and reduced the ability of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) to be damaging. The prevailing view is that oxidised LDL plays a major role in the formation of plaques leading to heart disease, so anything that reduces this risk is good news. Another study showed the antioxidant compounds in bananas helped protect nerve cells, which in turn could help protect the brain from Alzheimer's Disease.

    Vitamin Power
The banana is the best fruit source of vitamin B6 (one small banana provides around a quarter of your daily needs; one big banana provides nearly half of your daily needs). B6 helps with the production of neurotransmitters including serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The banana is also a wonderful source of vitamin C, along with modest amounts of the B group vitamins folate, niacin, riboflavin and pantothenic acid.

    Low Glycaemic Index
The average Glycemic Index of bananas is 52, less for under-ripe bananas as they have a higher starch content and a lower sugar content. A GI of 52 is classified as low, meaning that it doesn't cause high blood sugar levels. That makes the banana a good fruit choice for people with diabetes.

    Cancer fighter
Bananas contain lectins, which have been strongly linked to a reduction in the risk of cancer and potentially helpful in the treatment of cancer. Plant lectins are known to resist digestion and enter the blood stream intact. They can affect the growth and proliferation of cancer cells, and even cause their ultimate death.

Bananas can help reduce the risk of kidney cancer. Research on 61 000 Swedish women found that, of all the fruits, bananas gave the greatest protection against renal cancer. Women eating 5 bananas a week nearly halved their risk of renal cancer.

    Perfect pick-me-up
Carbohydrate snacks are very useful for bringing low blood glucose levels back to normal and help avoid the mid-afternoon slump often experienced at work. We can
control our blood glucose levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods
every 2-4 hours to keep levels steady. Healthy carbohydrate snacks are very useful for clear thinking, improved memory and mood. Bananas are ideal, because of their low GI and zero fat level.

    Healthy Blood Pressure
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium and salt-free, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. Australian and international research show that a diet high in potassium and low in salt helps to keep blood pressure normal. Less than 1 in 10 people get enough potassium to reduce their risk of chronic disease, like stroke. That leaves a lot of room for high potassium foods like the banana.

    Healthy & happy insides
We all know that high fibre foods help keep you regular and prevent constipation. High in fibre, bananas included in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, without resorting to laxatives. A medium banana will provide about 10% of your fibre needs for a day.

    Weight control
You won't get fat on a banana. Bananas have a high satiety index, that is, they are very filling for the amount of kilojoules they provide. Imagine eating a medium sized serve of fries. Not particularly filling are they? Imagine eating four bananas at once. You would probably stop at one or two. Well, four bananas have the same number of kilojoules as a medium fries, yet so much more filling. If you are trying to maintain a healthy weight then eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and go easy on the fatty foods. As there is no fat in a banana it is almost impossible to get fat on a banana!

Now that you know a lot more about the health benefits of your favourite fruit, please tell your friends. And remember, leave bananas in the fruit bowl to ripen naturally. When you buy bananas, buy a mix of ripe and green bananas so you get a steady flow of ripe bananas. Lovely as they are you don't want them all becoming ripe on the same day!

    The Truth about margarine!!

Polyunsaturated margarine has become a major part of the Western diet and has overtaken butter in popularity in the mid-20th century. Despite their best efforts, the margarine lobby has failed to convince most people that their synthetic concoctions are healthy. So what is not obvious to most of the people who consume it? The manufacturing process of course, which is very similar to the way plastic is produced.

Many consumers are also now choosing a particular imitation buttery spread because its label says it contains omega-3, not realizing the fatty acid is inferior compared with omega-3 from fish oil.

The problem is most consumers don't have the nutrition savvy to know or understand how omega-3s are extracted and that they are not all the same.

Many of these spreads are only accentuating the all too pervasive imbalance that vegetable oils are causing with our omega-6 to omega-3 ratios. That imbalance has been linked to an increased risk for heart disease and may contribute to cancer, asthma, osteoporosis, inflammation, depression and other ailments. A growing body of evidence suggests the overconsumption of omega-6 needs attention.

The ideal ratio between these two fatty acids is 1:1 and the nutritional habits of most people in developed nations has this ratio soaring more than 15:1 (omega 6: omega 3). So unless you are consuming reasonable amounts of omega 3 in your diet, you should stay away from any type of spread or oil saturated with omega 6. Omega-3 and omega-6 compete for the same metabolic enzymes.

Why You Should Avoid Margarine, Shortening and Spreads
There are a myriad of unhealthy components to margarine and other butter imposters, including:
    • Trans fats: These unnatural fats in margarine, shortenings and spreads are formed during the process of hydrogenation, which turns liquid vegetable oils into a solid fat

Trans fats contribute to heart disease, cancer, bone problems, hormonal imbalance and skin disease; infertility, difficulties in pregnancy and problems with lactation; and low birth weight, growth problems and learning disabilities in children.
A U.S. government panel of scientists determined that man-made trans fats are unsafe at any level. (Small amounts of natural trans fats occur in butter and other animal fats, but these are not harmful.)
    • Free radicals: Free radicals and other toxic breakdown products are the result of high temperature industrial processing of vegetable oils. They contribute to numerous health problems, including cancer and heart disease.
    • Synthetic vitamins: Synthetic vitamin A and other vitamins are added to margarine and spreads. These often have an opposite (and detrimental) effect compared to the natural vitamins in butter.
    • Emulsifiers and preservatives: Numerous additives of questionable safety are added to margarines and spreads. Most vegetable shortening is stabilized with preservatives like BHT.
    • Hexane and other solvents: Used in the extraction process, these industrial chemicals can have toxic effects.
    • Bleach: The natural colour of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil is grey so manufacturers bleach it to make it white. Yellow colouring is then added to margarine and spreads.
    • Artificial flavours: These help mask the terrible taste and odour of partially hydrogenated oils, and provide a fake butter taste.
    • Mono- and di-glycerides: These contain trans fats that manufacturers do not have to list on the label. They are used in high amounts in so-called "low-trans" spreads.
    • Soy protein isolate: This highly processed powder is added to "low-trans" spreads to give them body. It can contribute to thyroid dysfunction, digestive disorders and many other health problems.
    • Sterols: Often added to spreads to give them cholesterol-lowering qualities, these oestrogen compounds can cause endocrine problems; in animals these sterols contribute to sexual inversion.

I don't eat much butter myself but I do select it as an option on any opportunity over these chemical and so-called healthier spreads. If you really want to use a healthy spread, try coconut butter or one of many healthy nut butters available. The further you stay away from chemical and genetically modified spreads made with GMO oils, the healthier your diet will be.

    Neat 3B Body Saver Testimonials

Neat 3B Body Saver Cream incorporates an effective antiperspirant is a soothing cream for application to areas where skin surfaces rub together and become inflamed. The underlying problem in these situations is perspiration and the resultant chafing between skin surfaces: sites at which this occurs are between the buttocks, between the legs and beneath the breasts .

The product may also help to prevent fungal infections such as tinea and intertrigo which tend to occur in these warm, moist areas of the body. These problems are common amongst people who are active and who participate in sporting activities. Chafing and associated friction problems may also occur in people who carry extra weight. Neat 3B Body Saver Cream has quickly been adopted by sports people and by people living in the warm climate areas of the world.

    How To Use

Neat Feat 3B should be applied to clean, dry skin once or twice daily, depending on individual requirements. The active antiperspirant reduces the amount of sweat produced and the emollient, lubricating cream base prevents friction and chafing.

    Fat vs Sugar

I watched an extremely interesting show on SBS the other night where two doctors performed a study on whether fat or sugar was worse for you. As identical twins with identical genes they are ideally placed to test the impact of high fat and sugar diets. The findings were quite interesting. They were not allowed to either increase or decrease exercise , they had to continue exactly what they had been doing except one went on a high-fat diet with just 5 per cent carbs while the other had a super low-fat, high-carb regime.

Their gruelling month-long quest, detailed the rival metabolic impacts on both their minds and bodies and saw them both lose weight  The doctor who ate just carbs for the months lost 1 kg of body fat and blood sugar levels were normal and lost no muscle density. The doctor who ate just fat lost 3 kg, 2 kg of muscle density and 1kg of fat. His blood sugar levels were also higher. This was due to not having carbs/suagr so his body had stopped producing insulin because it has no sugar to deal with.

They also did the study feeding laboratory rats with either high-fat and high-sugar diets and this did little to change their daily habits or health, but supply them with chocolate, biscuits and cheesecake (a near 50-50 fat and sugar split) and behaviour changed radically. They ignored other foods for the cheesecake, going back to it regularly rather than gorging, and put on weight. Their self-regulation system, that naturally stopped them eating too much fat or sugar, effectively switched off.

This became their main source of calories. They gained massive amounts of weight, became sedentary, slept a lot and did not move around any more.It was found that the increased processed food was overriding the body’s natural hormones that regulate the bodies calorie intake by alerting the brain that the body has enough calories.

We are surrounded by pretty delicious, relatively affordable and palatable foods, and it has been found that people have to exert quite a level of dietary restraint if they are not going to sleepwalk into obesity.

They also found no one food is saint or sinner while modest lifestyle changes and balanced diet is really the way to a healthy lifestyle. Research over the last 10 years has given scientist great confidence to say that no single macro-nutrient diet reduction is the answer. Cutting out a single thing will not solve your weight loss problem. Faddish diets simply do not work very well.It is about building an environment in your life where you can eat healthy diet and get enough exercise.

If you find yourself following a fad diet you may find you need to change it within a few months as you rise and fall through weight loss.Processed foods are delicious and we tend to eat a lot of them so it may be a painful conclusion that we have to remove a bit of deliciousness from our lives but you can find healthy foods that are also as delicious.

    Senior B

Most of us would have some elderly relatives in our families and know that unfortunately as you get older your body no longer is working the same as when you were younger. Neat Feat have developed a product that is similar as baby b but for adults who's bladder control is not what it used to be.

Neat 3B Senior B was developed by Doctors who wanted a product that prevented rash rather than an 'after the fact treatment' as are most of the rash creams on the market.
    • Helps to prevent skin rash
    • Neutralizes acidic urine
    • Returns the skin to normal pH range
    • Contains moisturizers and emollients
    • Keeps skin soft and supple
    • Inhibits the growth of fungi
    • Non-prescription

A NON-PRESCRIPTION method of managing skin rash, it works by restoring the normal environment of the skin, so that rash cannot be sustained. It inhibits the growth of fungi that contributes to skin irritation. Neat 3B Senior B reduces excess moisture and promotes more natural pH balance for the skin.

Benefits of Strength Training for Women

I have women at the gym ask me how can I lift heavy weights, aren't you scared you are going to become big and bulky and look like a man. The answer is NO, the average women would have to live and breathe weights and also we do not contain enough testosterone unless you take supplement

My training during the week includes 2 PT session (Monday & Wednesday) Tuesday I do a double class Grit and Body attack and Saturday Body Attack. I have to drive 20 minutes to get to the gym I go to but I love the feeling of becoming fitter and stronger. Also I walk my dog everyday, either in the morning or the afternoon which ever fits best into my day.

The benefits of strength training for women incredible. Strength training has been overlooked as a viable weight loss method for way too long and also assists in everyday life.
Women are beginning to realize just how important a proper strength training routine is for their overall health.

Below are what I think are they top 10 benefits of weight training for women.

    1) Increased Metabolic Rate - Here is one of the most important benefits of strength training for women. We all want to discover the secrets to weight loss… well here is the first secret! Strength training increases your metabolic rate by increasing the calories you burn on a daily basis even at rest. The more muscle you have the higher your metabolic rate the more body fat you will drop .
    2) Increases and Restores Bone Density - Strength training prevents and fights osteoporosis. Read this information on how it can help to be prevented http://www.osteoporosis.org.au/about/about-osteoporosis/excercise/
    3) Increased Lean Muscle Mass -  You will not get big and bulky by strength training! You simply do not have enough testosterone in your body. Yes, if you train for hours and hours and dedicate your life to becoming a bodybuilder you can bulk up.
But simply lifting weights as part of a regular strength training routine will not cause women to bulk up . Again the more lean muscle mass the more calories you will burn in a day. Muscle is a living organ and fat is just fat.
    4) Injury Prevention - Strength training strengthens our muscles and tendons. The stronger we are the less chance of an injury. This is especially important as we grow older. The benefits of strength training for women and men is recommended for injury prevention.
    5) Improved Balance - Especially important as we grow older. Strength training builds a strong foundation. Strengthening our legs and core section means an increase in overall balance and coordination.
    6) Decreased Risk of Coronary Disease - Strength training can reduce your blood pressure. It can also decrease your cholesterol levels. These benefits of strength training for women alone are a great reason to begin your program today.
    7) Aids in Rehabilitation and Recovery - Strengthening the muscles around our joints is one of the best ways to prevent and recover from an injury.
    8) Enhanced Performance in Sports, Exercise and Life In General - The benefits of strength training for women all boil down to one point- a better overall quality of life. We can perform our favorite activities with more ease and less pain. We are able to increase our health and mental state from a regular strength training routine.
    9) Aging Gracefully - With less falls and less injuries we are able to age gracefully. Our lean and toned bodies create a warm and strong persona. Strength training is a major factor in aging well. Enhancing our muscles and reducing body fat are prime ways to prevent sagging body parts too ;)
    10) Feeling Better and Looking Better - I don’t think it is much of a secret that we all want to look great. We are all searching for ways to look young. Strength training is a vital part of a fitness routine.
Strength training has been shown to increase our muscle tone, decrease body fat, and improve our everyday life. So don't be scared to push you body to the point where there is a little pain. Remember No pain, No gain (within reason of course)

    Inspirational cooking : Four Plates

I have hit that point with my cooking where I am getting bored and looking for inspiration. I want to start cooking some different meals as I am getting bored with cooking the same thing all the time. I want to keep it healthy but also different and interesting for my family.

This is where you meet the beautiful Bec . I met Bec at the gym I go to and she was always posting the most amazing dishes on Instagram which made me drool everyday (not good for the computer) She has now started a Facebook page called Four Plates which has an array of amazing meals and recipes.

Here is a bit of info about how her journey into food started:

My food journey began when I had my first child, Tate. Being a new mother, everything had to be fresh and healthy and, in the process, I started cleaning up my diet also.  I was the fussiest eater in my childhood (and my mum would vouch for this) so it seemed unbelievable to everybody who knew me that I started cooking and really experimenting with flavours and complicated techniques.

I have really blossomed since the birth of my second child, Harper, and we live by my 80/20 rule, 80% red wine....just kidding... 80% fresh, clean food and 20% for naughtiness. I have also become a bit of a fitness junkie and I visit the gym 4 times a week -  fitness and healthy food go hand-in-hand for me. My focus is on simple, healthy cooking and sometimes pushing my techniques to a new level.

So if you are looking for new ideas or just want to surprise your family with something new and tasty check out https://www.facebook.com/fourplates .You will be salivating everyday.

    Health supplements

I was talking to a friend of mine at the gym about taking vitamin supplements to help boost your health and prevent you getting sick. I take a women's multi-vitamin and a immune support called Astra Forte everyday. Over the past 2 years I really haven't had any serious flus or colds and if I do get a cold it is generally short lived. My daughter also takes a multi-vitamin everyday and has not really caught anything serious either.

We have a pretty good diet including lots of fresh fruit and vegies but take the supplements to make sure we have a good dose of everything. What Astra Forte does is support the immune system. Astragalus root has a tradition of use in Chinese medicine as a general tonic and to support healthy immune function. It also may reduce the severity and duration of colds.

What health supplements do you take to help improve your health or prevent you from getting sick??

    The Pain of High Heels

Every woman knows the pain you get in your feet when wearing high heels on a night out. I personally do not really wear high heels and when I do I suffer from pain under ball of my foot and struggle to walk the next day. I only wear them on special nights which really is not that often so I know if I am going to wear high heels (because they do make you look great) I know my feet are going to pay for it.

With my wedding and hens night I wore heels on both those nights. I had been given some Femme Gel Forefoot Insole's, which is a gel filled pad you stick to the front of your heel to give it cushioning so knowing they were both going to be big nights on my feet I thought I would give them a go. To my surprise the front of my foot had no pain and I was able to get up in the morning with out limping around with sore feet. I did end up with some blisters though so I will be researching a way to eliminate that as well.

Here is some information on the Gel insole

Neat Feat Femme Gel Forefoot insole is a double layered superior polymer gel, tailored to fit high heel and fashionable shoes. The insole has an adhesive backing so they can be placed firmly at the front of the shoe. These will ease the pressure on the front of the shoes reducing discomfort and protecting the pad of the foot.

They also do have a wide range of different gel insoles to help to make wearing high heels as comfortable as possible. Check out the Neat Feat website for the range. I personally am going to try some of the other products and maybe start wearing high heels more often. Also might be an excuse to go shoe shopping.

    Benefit of kids playing outside

Yesterday afternoon I was out walking my dog and came across a group of abut 10 kids playing on a side street. They were laughing and riding their bikes up and down a hill and I realised that I had not seen this for a very long time. I actually could not recall the last time I had seen a group of kids playing in the street.

We are very lucky because we live on a avocado farm so my little girl is outside playing all the time usually playing with our dog or helping me to go feed the cattle or riding her bike around the house. It got me thinking do kids get the chance to go play and just have fun or is technology getting in the way.

I did some research and found some of the benefits of kids playing outside. Sending children outside to play may not only be healthier for them physically, but it may be better for them psychologically too. A research project called Child of Our Time produced by the BBC is tracking the growth of twenty-five children from the time they're born until they become adults. After reaching the midpoint of this study, they've made an important observation - children who play outside laugh more.
They say that laughter is the best medicine and this may hold true for kids too. Not only is laughter a stress reliever, but the physical movements involved with laughing gives the heart and lungs a workout. Laughter also stimulates the immune system to fight off colds and viruses that children are so susceptible too. If playing outside causes children to laugh more - it's something they need more of.

Children playing outside experience other health benefits as well. They're more likely to be adventurous and open to new experiences than a child who lives parked in front of the television set. Outdoor play fuels the imagination of children and teaches them how to be resourceful by creating their own entertainment. It also brings them closer to nature.

Of course there are also the more obvious health benefits of playing outside such as positive benefits on the heart and a reduction in the risk of certain diseases such as diabetes and obesity. Running and jumping builds stronger bones and muscles.

The best source of vitamin D is the sun and when a child spends all his time indoors, his risk of developing a vitamin D deficiency is high - which could lead to health problems later in life.

Obviously, the benefits of playing outside are many; but the sad reality is that the time kids spend outdoors has dropped significantly over the past few decades. Now kids spend their time with fictional game characters instead of other children - and that lost time can never be replaced. Isn't it time to cut off the television set and give your child a chance to explore the great outdoors? Once you do, listen hard - and don't be surprised if you hear the sound of laughter.

    Our Wedding

I'm back, Well we had the most perfect wedding. I mean everything went perfect not a single hiccup. Mind you I was very stressed before hand making sure that everything was organised. Also the dresses weren't ready until 2 days before the wedding and one of the bridesmaids dresses was very tight but it had to do cause we didn't have time to have them re altered.

The day was wonderful and full of people we loved and cared about. It was so lovely to have them all there to celebrate our love for each other and it made us realise how many special people we have in our lives. We had the most perfect weather as well. Then it was off on our honeymoon. We went to Hamilton Island and it was perfect too. Was very hard to come back to reality of not having a Pina colada at 2pm in the afternoon but its now time to get back to work and save up for out next adventure.

    3B Saver Testimonials

Here are a few testimonials for Neat 3B Action Cream. Feel free to comment if you have tried this product. It really is a great product.

OMG! I talked to a very nice and knowledgeable lady at Wal-Mart about my very personal problems with all the reasons you might need this product. She had "heard" that this was good for my situation. It is absolutely Amazing! I have been dealing with my issues for over 25 years. Now it is completely under control. It is worth every single penny. I thought it was a little pricy, but I quickly found out that you only need to use a very small amount. And it stays on til your next shower. I am spreading the word on this product. I am also glad that I found your website as I have already found products that I didn't know existed that will help with other problems I have. Thanks a lot.

    By Dianne

It works better than petroleum vaseline or any other cream.

    By Elizabeth

We're from the States, and we were honeymooning in NZ. Chafing struck creating much discomfort. We bought this product. It worked almost immediately. We have been buying it since - over 10 years now! GREAT product!

    Sore feet during exercise.

I was talking to a few of the mums at the gym and they were commenting on when they do high intensity exercise that the were finding that they their feet were feeling uncomfortable and sore after they finished high intensity cardio workouts. I used to get this problem where I would get pain in the arch of my foot. I couldn't afford to go to a podiatrist so I  made sure I bought myself a good pair of shoes and invested in a sports insole.

This helped with arch support and prevent the arch from falling which can cause pain and also gives cushioning and helps to absorb shock in the foot on impact with the ground. I have found that it has made a difference on how my feet react the next day and also I no longer get shin splints. I would recommend wearing a sport insole to anyone who is involved in high intensity sport or just doing a general workout to help with the health of your feet.

    Exercising safely while Pregnant

    EXERCISES

A number of health clubs now offer their members pre / post Natal classes. These can be a good in both learning correct exercise techniques from a qualified fitness instructor, and also meeting new mums to be.

Weight bearing exercises, such as walking, aerobics, steppers have a much better effect on easing pregnancy discomforts and complaints than non weight bearing exercises such as swimming and cycling.

Weight training for the upper body will help improve the muscle tone, however avoid exercises that place strain on your lower back, and lifting the weights above head height. If you're used to lifting weights, concentrate on good technique, reducing both the weight and reps, but increase the sets, making sure you avoid over exertion. If you have no experience with weights, seek guidance from a qualified professional.

During pregnancy both your heart rate (15 beats per minute) blood volume (40 %) and respiratory rate are increased. This enables a greater flow of nutrients and oxygen to be supplied to the developing foetus.

This in turn reduces the amount of oxygen and blood flow for the mum to be to use during the initial phase of exercise, and can cause dizziness, therefore any exercise should have a gradual increase in effort.

Whilst exercising blood is transferred to working muscles, therefore any over exertion will transfer the nutrients carried within the blood away from the developing foetus.

Remember to know your limits, and don't get carried away with your workout, especially if you train regularly and have a competitive streak.

GETTING BACK INTO SHAPE AFTER BIRTH

Listen to your body, generally you will need 4 - 6 weeks postpartum for a vaginal birth, and 6 - 8 weeks for a surgical birth.

Getting back into shape, or returning back to your pre pregnancy weight will depend greatly on the amount of exercise that you have done both prior and during your pregnancy.

For those that are used to exercise, start back gradually at your own pace with the exercises that you like, stopping immediately if you feel any pain or discomfort.

Again a number of gyms offer post natal class's, these are an excellent way to learn how to get back into shape and meet new mums.

    Exercising and Pregnancy

When I was pregnant with my first child I didn't really exercise much at all, unfortunately this led to me gaining over 20kg and not feeling the best towards the end of my pregnancy. Now having lost that weight and feeling fit and strong and about to start trying for our next baby I have decided there is no way I am going to let this happen to me again. I am planning to exercise the whole way through my pregnancy (if everything is going well) I did some research because I wanted information about exercising while pregnant . This is what I found.

Research has shown the following benefits from exercising whilst pregnant:
Greater ability to handle the discomforts of pregnancy and labour.
    • Easier to get back into shape and regain you're normal weight after pregnancy.
    • Fewer caesarean surgeries, and less likely to require epidural analgesia.
    • Faster labour, with less need for induction with pitocin.
    • A more positive, healthier feeling pregnancy.
With exercise improving your muscle tone, strength and endurance, woman who train regularly throughout their pregnancy are greater prepared for the physical stress that carrying a baby and labour produce.

Make sure you have the all clear from your doctor to exercise, Here are some guidelines to follow while exercising during pregnancy.

    • Drink plenty of fluids, before, during and after any exercise; be careful not to get overheated especially during your first trimester and in warm humid conditions. Exercise causes sweat, the bodies natural way of cooling down, remember your baby has no way to cool down, so drinking fluid is vital.
    • For woman who trained prior to pregnancy, regular exercise is preferable to sporadic exercise, ideally 3 times per week. Varied research has suggested that woman who have not exercised previously should not begin to after 26 weeks gestation due to the development of the placenta.
    • Avoid any form of exercise that may cause you to lose your balance, especially in the third trimester. Sports with a high risk of hard falls, such as skiing or basketball should be off limits.
    • Dress wearing loose fitting clothing, with a good support bra, and comfortable non slip supportive shoes.
    • Don't exercise flat on your back after your first trimester, as your uterus would have grown out of your pelvis, and the weight of it, when you are on your back reduces your blood and oxygen flow to your baby.
    • During aerobic exercise, you will have less oxygen available for yourself, so lower the intensity of your normal routine. Monitor your heart rate regularly to avoid exercising to exhaustion and slow down if you can't hold a conversation comfortably.
    • Stop exercising immediately if you have any of the following; vaginal bleeding or fluid leaking, contractions, light-headed or feeling faint, shortness of breath, dizziness and nauseated.
    • Avoid bouncing and jerking exercises, and deep knee bends, as your joints are more prone to injury because of the pregnancy hormone relaxin, which softens ligaments and tendons to allow your bones to spread for the birth of your baby.
    • Your metabolism speeds up during pregnancy so remember to eat a well balanced diet with an additional 300 calories a day.

    Diabetes and Your Feet

I have a few family member that have type 2 diabetes and some friends who have type 1. I was talking to them about how it affects there lives and the subject of feet came up and how they really have to take care of them because of the diabetes.

I found out that when you have diabetes you have to take very good care of your feet every day to prevent serious complications. Your feet are at risk because diabetes can cause damage to the nerves and the blood supply.

    Damage is more likely
  • You have had diabetes for a long time
  • Your blood glucose levels have been too high for an extended period
  • You smoke
  • You are inactive.

  • Poor blood glucose control can cause nerve damage to feet. Symptoms include:
    • Numbness
    • Coldness of the legs
    • A tingling, pins and needles sensation in the feet
    • Burning pains in the legs and feet, usually more noticeable in bed at night.
These symptoms can result in a loss of sensation in the feet which increases the risk of accidental damage because you can’t feel any pain. An injury to the feet can develop into an ulcer on the bottom of a foot which can penetrate to the bone. This could lead to osteomyelitis and a chronic infection in the bones and joints. If an infection isn’t treated at the earliest signs, this could result in ulceration (an infected open sore) and eventually amputation (removal of a toe, foot or limb).

My sister in-law and friend use a diabetic insole in there shoe. This provides better pressure distribution ,soft tissue arch support and cushions and protects the entire base of the foot. They have found that having the insole makes it a lot easier to be on their feet all day as they do have sensitive feet.

    Testimonial:
I bought these after suffering achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis in both feet for 2 plus years! The inserts have given me a good measure of relief that I never thought I would ever get again! Still a long way to go but at least I can walk around the house without wanting to cut my feet off! I am using them in a sling back sandal as I can't stand a shoe yet and am having trouble getting them to stay in place without having to resort to glue. I guess I will just have to buy more and glue them into every shoe I have :)

    The Love of Zori's

After posting about Zori's Sandals I have had quite a few people get back to me on what they think about them. They really are the best alternative to wearing thongs as you get no foot pain as they support arches of your feet. Unfortunately thongs/flip flops cause you to take shorter steps and changes the way your walk which generally give people pain in their lower back.

Here are a few testimonials on Zori's

I bought them last year when I saw the add on TV. I have been struggling with my feet for over a year now and nothing seems to help. The zoris do the trick. And yes it sounds weird but I do not want to take them off at all. This is how comfy these shoes are!
Can you make other shoes just like this?!

    Tanja

I bought a pair for my son who was constantly having back pain and arch pain in his foot. I thought I would try a pair for him to see if they would help. To my surprise they did he no longer has pain and combined with really good walking shoe he is a new boy. Also I have now bought a pair for my wife and I . Thanks Neat Feat

    Dan
    Sunshine Coast , QLD

I bought a pair of these whilst travelling in New Zealand and where them constantly now lm back in the UK. There are extremely comfortable and give far more support than a normal flip flop, my legs definitely ache much less in these. I have received many compliments whilst wearing these and they definitely do not look like and orthotic shoe. Excellence value for money.

    Janice Hammet

I have a pair of Zori sandals that I got before I went to Bali.
I wore them everyday and walked a lot and never had sore tired feet. I was extremely happy with them. They are a few years old now and am going to get the new design that I saw in a chemist.
